A recent study has shown the potential of using a combination of female sex hormones to enhance sexual desire and performance. Researchers from the University of the West London in the UK and colleagues have found that a combination of female sex hormones may enhance sexual desire and performance in women.
“One of the most interesting aspects of this research is the way the women’s sexual desire is often impacted by the hormones they are taking. The study was presented at the American Society of Clinical Endocrinology’s annual meeting in San Francisco in September in San Francisco. This is the fourth and last major international study to examine the effects of female sex hormones on sexual desire and performance. This research is the first to use a combination of the hormones to enhance sexual performance in women.
The researchers recruited healthy, non-pregnant women. They recruited women who were in their mid-30s or older, and asked them to record their sexual activity, as well as their overall satisfaction with sex. The women then underwent two assessments:
“We found that women using Addyi experienced significantly higher sexual desire than did women who were not taking Addyi. These results were similar to those reported by the American College of Endocrinology and Hormone Bulletin,” said the study’s lead author, Professor of Clinical Endocrinology at the University of the West London. “We hypothesised that Addyi’s sexual arousal was mediated by the hormones produced by the female sex hormone, which could be responsible for increasing female libido, arousal and satisfaction.”
In order to test the efficacy of a combined treatment of female sex hormones and Addyi, the team tested the combination of the two hormones in 16 women with a diagnosis of hypoactive sexual desire disorder. After taking Addyi, the women reported a significantly higher desire for sex.
They also looked at their overall satisfaction with sex. The women did not report any additional sexual side effects, and their satisfaction levels were relatively low.
“While we have a good understanding of how female hormones influence sexual desire, this research shows that this may be a useful tool in the fight against female sexual dysfunction,” said the study’s lead author, Professor of Clinical Endocrinology at the University of the West London. “The research we have conducted suggests that women who are in their mid-30s or older may have a complex relationship with sexual dysfunction.”

The researchers hope that a combination of the hormones will be able to enhance sexual desire and performance in women. The team, led by Dr. Rebecca Hall, University of the West London, will conduct a pilot study to test the efficacy of Addyi.
